Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *stagas, from Proto-Indo-European *stegʰ-. Baltic cognates include Lithuanian stãgaras (“dry stalk, switch”). Indo-European cognates include Ancient Greek στόχος (stókhos, “brick pillar”), possibly Old English staca (“stake”).
A less likely derivation is from Proto-Indo-European *stog-os (“hut, cover”).
