Etymology

Traditionally reconstructed as *smugnǫti and connected with Lithuanian smáugti, English smoke, Ancient Greek σμύχω (smúkhō), Armenian մուխ (mux). In view of *smogorъ, *smogolь, *smagnǫti, may be seen as a secondary nasalisation and related to Lithuanian smógos, smogóti; compare *smęgnǫti.
