Old Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. Usually considered an inheritance from Proto-Indo-European, cognate with Middle Irish múch (“smoke”), Welsh mwg, Old English smoca (English smoke), Ancient Greek σμύχω (smúkhō, “burn with smoldering flame”), but the proto-form presents us with difficulties concerning the vocalic length and the velar.
