[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śer(s)nos, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱer(H)-no-m. Cognate with Latvian sȩ̄rsna (“hoarfrost”), Lithuanian šerkšnas (“hoarfrost”), Old Armenian սառն (saṙn, “ice”), Proto-Germanic *herzną.
