[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *plauˀtá, from Proto-Indo-European *plowtóm, *plewt-. Cognate with Latvian plàuts, Lithuanian plaũtas, Proto-Germanic *flauþī- (> Old Norse *fleyðr (“cross-beam”)), Latin pluteus, and Finnish lauta (“bath shelf, board”) (through either Baltic or Germanic).
