Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *plauˀtá, from Proto-Indo-European *plowtóm, *plewt-. Cognate with Latvian plàuts, Lithuanian plaũtas, Proto-Germanic *flauþī- (> Old Norse *fleyðr (cross-beam)), Latin pluteus, and Finnish lauta (bath shelf, board) (through either Baltic or Germanic).
