[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *pánˀta, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ponh₁-to-m, from *(s)penh₁- (“to twist, weave”). Cognate with Lithuanian pántis (“horse-lock”), Old Prussian panto (“fetter”), Old Armenian հանում (hanum, “to weave, sow together”).
