[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kū́ˀjas, from Proto-Indo-European *kuh₂yos, from the root *kewh₂- (“to hit, strike”).
Cognate with Lithuanian kūjis (“hammer”) and Old Prussian cugis (“hammer”).
