Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/korvъ
Appearance
Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Archaism of the masculine gender from *kòrva f (“cow”), which is inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kárˀwas, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱórh₂-wos (“horned (animal)”), from *ḱerh₂- (“head, top; horn”). By surface analysis, *kòrva (“cow”) + *-ъ. Displaced by *bỹkъ (“bull”) and *vòlъ (“ox”). Cognate with Proto-Celtic *karwos, Ancient Greek κερᾰός (kerăós), Latin cervus.
