[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *galdás, from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾oldʰ-ó-s, from *g⁽ʷ⁾eldʰ- (“to desire greedily , to wish”).[1][2]
Cognate with Sanskrit गृध्र (gṛ́dhra, “desiring greedily”).[3]
