[edit]From *gatъ, *gatь (“type of barrier or border”) + *-iti, formally a causative-iterative extension of Proto-Balto-Slavic *gā́ˀtei (“to go, to proceed”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeh₂- (“to go”).
