Etymology

Indirectly attested in *sverěpъ (horse’s burdock), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *éśwāˀ (mare), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos.[1] Displaced by *koňь m, *komoňь m; *kobyla f. Also were found in toponyms: Belarusian Асве́я (Asvjéja) / Russian Осве́я (Osvéja), Belarusian Асві́ца (Asvíca) / Russian Осви́ца (Osvíca).
