[edit]Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *búrˀtis, *búrˀtas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerH- (“to bore, to drill”) + *-tь. Cognate with Latvian burts (“letter, mark”), Lithuanian bùrtas (“lot”), bùrtis (“sign”). Further related to Latin forāmen (“opening”).
