[edit]From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gélˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelH- (“to inflict, to project; to hurt”). Cognate with Latvian dzel̂t (“to sting”), Lithuanian gélti (“to hurt”), Proto-Germanic *kwelaną (“to quell, to kill”), Proto-Iranian *gráHti (“to project, to strike”).
Modern descendants have preserved only the intensive stem *žiliti. Reflexes of the verbal noun *želtь are attested in Middle Russian жолоть (žolotʹ, “inflicted pain, trauma”).
