Proto-Slavic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gélˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelH- (to inflict, to project; to hurt). Cognate with Latvian dzel̂t (to sting), Lithuanian gélti (to hurt), Proto-Germanic *kwelaną (to quell, to kill), Proto-Iranian *gráHti (to project, to strike).

Modern descendants have preserved only the intensive stem *žiliti. Reflexes of the verbal noun *želtь are attested in Middle Russian жолоть (žolotʹ, inflicted pain, trauma).
