From earlier *sjūju, inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sjaujás, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₁)sewyós.

Indo-European cognates include Sanskrit सव्य (savya, left), Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬊𐬎𐬎𐬀 (haouua), 𐬵𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬌𐬀 (haoiia), Middle Welsh aswy, aseu (left) (*adsewyo-, *adsewo-).
