[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unclear:
- Vasmer, Trubačev relate it to Lithuanian kìbiras (“bucket”), Latvian ciba (“small keg for milk”), which have been compared with Ancient Greek κίβος (kíbos, “chest”);
- Mladenov alternatively draws comparison with Ancient Greek κύμβη (kúmbē), Latin cumba, German Humpen, Sanskrit कुम्भ (kumbhá), Avestan 𐬑𐬎𐬨𐬠𐬀 (xumba) which are more often associated with similarly unclear Proto-Slavic *kubъ / *kǫbъ.
