[edit]Ultimately from Proto-Afroasiatic *pVrɣVč- (“flea, grasshopper, louse”). Dubiously connected by Dillmann to Ge'ez አንፈርዐጸ (ʾänfärʿäṣä, “to prance, to leap”). Compare also Proto-Turkic *bürge, *bürče and Proto-Indo-European *plúsis.
