From Proto-Afroasiatic. Compare Proto-Berber *a-ɣăyd (goat), Proto-Cushitic *gada-m- (antelope), and Proto-Chadic *gVda(y/m)- (antelope). Outside cognates may include Proto-Italic *haidos, Proto-Germanic *gaits, Proto-Nakh *gaaʒaᶰ, and possibly Basque gazte (young). False cognates include Greek γίδα (gída), Elamite 𒄭𒁺 (hi-du, goat), and Proto-Dravidian *yĀṭu (goat).
