Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Has been compared with Proto-Samic *jealëkkës (clear (of the sky)), but the first vowel does not correspond (PU *e → PSam *i, not *ä). Alternatively, perhaps related to Proto-Turkic *yal- (to burn, blaze).

*jälä[1]

  1. sun
  2. day
  3. light
