Etymology

From Proto-Uralic *ëla. Cognate with Proto-Finnic *ala, Proto-Samic *vuolē, Proto-Permic *ul.

The adverb and postposition likely contain the local case suffix *-na and derive from the intermediate form *ala-na; compare Finnish alla.
