[edit]Derived from verb *sanpu (“to grow wild, desolate, decrepit”, referring to both physical and emotional states), whence also modern Japanese 錆びる (sabiru, “to rust”, intransitive) and Japanese 錆 (sabi, “rust”).[1][2]
