Proto-Italic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From earlier *sedējō. Stative from the same root as *sizdō.[1]

    Verb

    [edit]

    *sedēō first-singular present indicative[1]

    1. to sit, to be sitting, to be seated

    Inflection

    [edit]

Second-conjugation stative verbs did not originally have perfect forms and for semantic reasons also should not have a past participle.

    • Latin sēdī was imported from a different paradigm (probably that of *sizdō, which in turn secondarily reformed its perfect in Latin to sīdī).
    • Past participle *sessos (Latin sessus) was originally a standalone adjective *sedtós.
