    Compound of Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewis (clearly, manifestly) and *dʰh₁-ye/o- (to render), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ew-. Cognates with Hittite 𒌋𒄴𒄭 (to see), Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hāwíš, Proto-Hellenic *awistʰomai, and Proto-Slavic *(j)avě.
