[edit]Either directly from thematic Proto-Indo-Iranian *láyȷ́ʰati, from Proto-Indo-European *léyǵʰ-e-ti, from *leyǵʰ- (“to lick”) + *-eti, or leveled and thematicized from athematic Proto-Indo-Iranian *láyždʰi ~ *liȷ́ʰánti, from Proto-Indo-European *léyǵʰ-ti ~ *liǵʰ-énti.
