From Proto-Indo-European *ḱúh₁mn̥, from the root *ḱewh₁- (to swell) +‎ *-mn̥; equivalent to kū- +‎ *-mə.[1] Compare Ancient Greek κύριος (kúrios), Latin cumulus, cavus.
