Proto-Germanic

[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *woydéyeti, causative of *weyd- (“to see”). Equivalent to *wītaną (“to know”) + *-janą. Cognate with Sanskrit वेदयति (vedayati, “announce”) and Old Irish foídid (“send”).
