Etymology
[edit]From Pre-Germanic *dendʰ-n-e-ti, from a Germanic root with quasi-Indo-European *dendʰ- (“to burn, kindle”), of unclear ultimate origin,[1] as solid cognates outside of Germanic are lacking.[2] Osthoff suggests Proto-Indo-European *deh₂w- (“kindle, burn”) (compare Ancient Greek δαίω (daíō, “to kindle”)), but Pokorny rejects this.[3]
