[edit]From an adjectival neuter form *swiHnom of Proto-Indo-European *suH- (“pig”) (compare Latin suīnus, Proto-Slavic *svinьja, Latvian sivēns). Synchronically analyzable as a derivative of *sūz (“sow”).[1]
