Etymology

From Pre-Germanic *storh₁-os, from Proto-Indo-European *sterh₁- (to be stiff); compare Tocharian A ṣtare (effort), as well as Ancient Greek στερεός (stereós, firm, solid). Along with Proto-Germanic *sturrāną, points to an unattested strong verb *steraną.[1]
