Proto-Germanic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *sleyg-, *sleyǵ- (to glide, smooth, spread). Cognate with Old Irish sligim (to smear) and Proto-Slavic *slizъkъ (smooth, slime).[1]

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Is PIE *(s)ley- (to slip, slide, be slimy) the ancestor of *sleyg-? There's a strong phonetic and semantic similarity here, as well as with *sleydʰ- (to slip, be slick). Perhaps these are all extensions of *(s)ley-, see more at the page for *sleydʰ-.”
