[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel(H)-p-, from *(s)kelH- (“to cut, split, divide”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) Orel connects the word to *skelbaną (“to shiver, tremble”),[1] though this is semantically dubious.
