[edit]Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *m̥h₂d-yéti ~ *m̥h₂d-yónti, from *meh₂d- (“to be wet”). Equivalent to *matiz (“food”) + *-janą; see *matiz for an alternative theory.[1]
