Etymology

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *m̥h₂d-yéti ~ *m̥h₂d-yónti, from *meh₂d- (to be wet). Equivalent to *matiz (food) +‎ *-janą; see *matiz for an alternative theory.[1]
