From Proto-Indo-European *(s)mer- (to fall into thought, remember, care for). Cognate with *mīmrōną (to think, keep in mind, be mindful, muse), Latin memor (mindful, thoughtful), Sanskrit स्मरति (smárati, he remembers, recollects).
