Proto-Germanic

Etymology

[edit]

Of uncertain origin. Traditionally considered a borrowing from Latin clībanus (baking vessel; oven), with semantic development "oven" > "heatable room",[1] though this is semantically doubtful.[2] Note that a relation to *kleubaną (to split, cleave) is semantically appealing, though phonetically difficult.
