Etymology

Unknown. Kroonen links *kling(w)aną (to shrink).[1] Compare also Proto-Celtic *glendos (valley, glen) and Proto-Germanic *klintaz (hill, cliff), of possible substrate origin.

In view of *klintaz, *klibą (cliff) and *kluftiz (cleft), sound symbolism may be involved.
