[edit]According to the Indogermanisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch, from Proto-Indo-European *gan-, *gandʰ- (“container, vessel”) through an extension *gán(dʰ)ō.[1] Cognates within Indo-European uncertain. Probably related to *kannǭ.
