From Proto-Indo-European *yúHs (sap, juice, broth), from *yewH- (to blend, mix (food), knead). Cognate with Latin iūs (juice, broth), Welsh uwd (porridge), and dialectal Lithuanian jū́šė (fish soup).[1]
