[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *yúHs (“sap, juice, broth”), from *yewH- (“to blend, mix (food), knead”). Cognate with Latin iūs (“juice, broth”), Welsh uwd (“porridge”), and dialectal Lithuanian jū́šė (“fish soup”).
