Etymology

From earlier *hemdiz, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱem- (hornless), as does generally do not have antlers or horns. Cognate with Ancient Greek κεμάς (kemás, young deer, pricket), Sanskrit शम (śáma, hornless).[1]
