Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *gʰegʰuǵʰos, from *gʰegʰuǵʰ- (cuckoo), which Gąsiorowski makes a reduplicated noun based on *gʰewǵʰ- (to hide), of the type of *kʷékʷlos. Cognate with Latvian dzeguze (cuckoo).
