[edit]Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *gʰegʰuǵʰos, from *gʰegʰuǵʰ- (“cuckoo”), which Gąsiorowski makes a reduplicated noun based on *gʰewǵʰ- (“to hide”), of the type of *kʷékʷlos. Cognate with Latvian dzeguze (“cuckoo”).
