[edit]From *garnō (“gut, intestine”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“gut, intestine”). Cognate with Latin hernia (“rupture”), Latin hīra (“empty gut”), Ancient Greek χορδή (khordḗ, “string”), Sanskrit हिर (híra, “band, strip”).
