[edit]Uncertain. Usually regarded as from a Proto-Indo-European root *pel- (“to sell”) and cognate with e.g. Lithuanian pel̃nas (“profit”), Proto-Slavic *pȇlnъ (“loot”), Ancient Greek πωλέω (pōléō, “I sell”).
