Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *púH-lo-s, from *puH- (to be rotten; putrid). Cognate with Lithuanian pū́ti (to rot), Latin pūs (foul, corrupt matter; pus), Sanskrit पूयति (pūyati, rots, smells), Persian پوسیدن (pusidan, to rot).[1]
