From Pre-Germanic *bʰoru-ḱos. For the root, compare Russian бо́ров (bórov, hog, castrated boar); for the suffix, compare *elhaz (elk), *selhaz (seal) and Proto-Indo-European *h₂ŕ̥tḱos (bear).
