From earlier *tušanti, borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (compare Proto-Balto-Slavic *tū́ˀsantis), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tuHsont-. Compare Erzya тёжань (ťožań), borrowed from the same Baltic source.
