Etymology

Borrowed from Proto-Germanic *rugiz. Has also been compared with Baltic words (like Latvian rudzis, Lithuanian rugỹs, Old Prussian rugis), but a borrowing from Baltic or Balto-Slavic would not have resulted in *rugis, but **rugëh.[1]
