Reconstruction:Proto-Finnic/piikivi
Appearance
Proto-Finnic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From *pii + *kivi. The first component is cognate at minimum to Proto-Samoyedic *pə̈j (“stone, flint”), and may be from a Proto-Uralic root *pije (“flint”). However, it is also possible that the first component is etymologically identical to *pii (“prong, tooth”), in which case the original meaning of the compound would have been "tooth-stone" rather than "flintstone".
Noun
[edit]*piikivi
- flint, flintstone
- Synonym: *ola
Inflection
[edit]See *kivi.
