Etymology

From Proto-Uralic *pele- (to fear) (whence also Proto-Samic *pëlëtēk). In Finnic, this root was extended with *-ka- to beget *pele-kä- > *pelkä-. The verb *pelgäit'äk and noun *pelko (fear) represent parallel derivatives from this stem, the verb with *-it'ak and the noun with *-o.
