Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic [Term?] (whence Latvian kāpt, Lithuanian kopti), or alternatively, derived from unattested noun *koopa (hoof), borrowed from Proto-Germanic *hōfaz.[1]
