Proto-Finnic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

According to Koivulehto, from earlier *küpte- or *kepte-, from Baltic *kʷep-tá (which would suggest *küpci, stem *küpte-, analogically to shifted to a stem in *-pse- after the change *c > *s). Latter from the past participle of Proto-Indo-European *pekʷ- (to cook, become ripe). The Indo-European root evidently had other variants, compare Proto-Italic *kʷekʷ-, Greek and Slavic *pekʷ- and Baltic *kʷep-.
