Proto-Finnic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From earlier *ilpekse; cognate with Proto-Samic *ëlpës. Further origin unknown, potentially a substrate word. Has at times been compared to Lithuanian vilpišys (wildcat) and other derivatives from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p- ~ *h₂ulp- as well; an Indo-European etymon proposed in a presentation given by Heikkilä (2015) is Proto-Indo-European *wḷp-iksios, which would have been borrowed into Finnic through a Para-West Uralic language (Proto-Indo-European *wḷp-iksios → Para-West Uralic *(w)ülpiksi > *ilpiksi → Early Proto-Finnic *ilpekse).
