Reconstruction:Proto-Finnic/hauki
Appearance
Proto-Finnic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From earlier *šauki. Has been considered a borrowing from early Proto-Slavic *ščaukā (from which late Proto-Slavic *ščuka),[1] but now this is considered untenable for phonetic reasons, and the Finnic and Slavic words might instead have a common substrate origin.[2]
Noun
[edit]*hauki[3]
- pike (fish)
Inflection
[edit]The descendants disagree on the inflection. Estonian, Votic, North Karelian, Livvi, Ludian, and some dialects of Finnish have an i-stem paradigm, while the remaining ones an e-stem.
